Baptismal Gowns

Alnor Design custom makes baptismal gowns and heirloom quality outfits for baptisms, christenings, naming day, dedication or blessing of your infant. An Alnor Design gown is made to enhance that special day with your child the center of attention. Gowns are machine and handsewn by Vibeke Alnor Fong.

Designs are  developed through collaboration with clients and their specific wishes to create a unique baptismal gown that can be used several times by siblings, nieces and nephews, other infant relatives or children of close friends at their baptisms, religious ceremony, introduction, presentation or family celebration.

Alnor Designs range from very traditional baptismal gowns with smocking, tucks and pleats to romantic baptismal gowns with ruffles, ribbons and lace to modern baptismal gowns with little or no ornamentation. Traditional and romantic style baptismal gowns are commonly cathedral length (2-3 feet beyond the foot of an infant). Modern-style gowns tend to be shorter, about one foot longer than the child.

     

Regardless of style chosen, Alnor Design will create a baptismal gown to your specifications and preferences. Fabrics selected for baptismal gowns are based on the style and design chosen and are most frequently silks, satin and cotton or cotton-blends. Lace can be made from cotton, silk or synthetics depending on the price range of the gown. Likewise lace can be either machine-made or hand-made.

     

Most baptismal gowns consist of an under-gown, usually in soft cotton such as batiste, commonly white or pastels with an over-gown of heavier fabric. Depending on the over-gown's weave and thickness the under-gown may show through. Overlays such as lace are commonly attached to the over-gown.

All seams are finished; frequently as French seams (hidden) to protect tender baby skin from frays and threads. Hems are double. Depending on the fabric and its condition, Alnor Design may be able to incorporate pieces of a wedding gown, an older baptismal gown, a handkerchief or other fabric with special significance into your baptismal gown.

                

It is possible to have the name, birthday and/or baptismal date of your child embroidered onto the baptismal gown.

The charge for a custom made baptismal gown starts at $150.00 plus the cost of fabric. Shipping and tax will be added to the total cost. Turn-around time from placement of the order with final design in place to delivery is 4-8 weeks depending on the chosen design.
